Pal Varga: Red-necked Parrot As their name suggests, Red-necked Parrots sport a bright red bib. They are members of the Blunt-tailed Parrot family and possess characteristic green body plumage and assorted colorful markings and include such species as the Blue-fronted, Yellow-headed, and Red-necked Parrots. Like other Blunt-tailed Parrots in the wild, Red-necks are true forest dwellers and excellent climbers, but they do not fly well and are also rather awkward on the ground. In captivity they will, even when kept in very large enclosures, give up flying altogether and either climb or run for long distances. These parrots are among those widely domesticated for their beautiful coloration and ability to talk. In the villages of their homeland, these "pets" are kept loose, allowed the freedom which keeps parrots lively and interested in their surroundings. In other countries, "bird lovers" often keep them alone in cages which are much too small -- this type of "solitary confinement" turns these generally-active birds into dull and apathetic creatures, drowsily paying little attention to what goes on around them.
