The favorite flower of lovers everywhere, the rose has always been known as the flower of romance. Egypt's Cleopatra contributed much to this romantic image of the rose. Her name will forever be entwined with the flower for when she entertained her lover Mark Anthony, Cleopatra covered the floor of her banquet hall will fragrant rose petals strewn eighteen inches deep. However, Egyptian royalty were not the only people captivated by the rose's beauty. When Roman nobles entertained their ruler Nero, they went to the enormous expense of filling their fountains with rose water and scattering roses and rose leaves on the ground and on cushions where the guests lay. For the meal itself, the host served the delicacy rose pudding with rose wine. Even in India, the rose was a beloved and romantic flower. There, the large pool in front of the Taj Mahal was nightly strewn with rose petals which were carefully skimmed off before Mumtaz Mahal bathed in the morning. For centuries, all around the world, the rose has been a symbol of luxury and love.
