Gene Jarvis: Lime Blossoms The Lime family, with species spread from the tropics through the temperate zones, is a large family of nearly three hundred species. Several well-known Limes of the Northern Hemisphere are the Linden, the North American Bass Wood, and the Silver Lime. The Limes, with their thick foliage of heart-shaped leaves, are frequently planted as shade trees. These trees are also loved for their fragrant flowers which draw many honeybees to feast on the nectar. The small, yellowish flowers have a common stalk wihich is partially fused to an elongated bract. The lime honey from these blossoms is highly prized for its delicate flavor, and it is sold commercially in some areas. Certain liqueurs and medicines contain this lime honey. In addition to the use of the flower's honey, man uses the blossoms to make delicious teas. Like other Limes, the Large-leafed Lime which occurs in central and eastern Europe, has a soft, smooth wood which man has carved into some beautiful finished pieces. During the Stuart rule of England, craftsmen created many magnificent lime carvings which still adorn English churches and palaces. The fiber from the Lime's tough inner bark finds uses in caning and wickerwork.
