Stanley Paine: McDonnell Douglas MD-82 The MD-82 is actually a variant of the DC-9 and was specifically designed for operators seeking increased passenger capacity in order to reduce operating costs. McDonnell Douglas originally developed new versions known as the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 Super 80 Series. However, in 1983, the company adopted a new system of MD designations for its commercial aircraft, the Super 80 now being known as the MD-80. By comparison with the DC-9 Series 50, the wingspan increased by fourteen feet, and the aircraft carried 172 passengers. The first example of the MD-80 was flown in 1979, and by 1983, a total of 275 of the airplanes had been ordered by the world's airlines. The MD-82 illustrated is designed for hot and high use. It is forty-three feet longer than the original DC-9 design, and the original accommodation for passengers has been almost doubled. This "stretched" version produces a most extraordinary plan-view silhouette.
