Kristin Rosenberg: Frau Dagmar Hastrup Rose Known for their fragrant, delicate blooms, roses have been the centerpiece in flower gardens throughout the world. Most hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras and miniatures bloom continuously during the growing season, while Old Garden Roses typically make their display only once per year. Rose hybridizers develop new varieties of roses by cross-breeding for desirable characteristics such as color or fragrance. For years, hybridizers have tried to develop a black rose, but the dark tissue of the petals absorbs so much heat that the flower dies before it opens. Blue roses are also difficult to develop because roses have no natural blue pigment. Nevertheless, roses are found in a rainbow of lovely colors, including various shades of red, orange, pink, ivory and yellow. The elegant Frau Dagmar Hastrup Rose displays beautiful pink blossoms, and is known for its spectacular rose hips.
